New year, new blog

Happy 2011! Today on 1/11/11, I thought I'd try something new and start my first blog. If everyone else out there can do it, why can't I? This blog will be primarily focused on my crafty side and highlight my quilting work and various inspirations I come across.

In January 2009, I signed up for my first sewing class since Home Ec at Colina Middle School in 8th grade. It was an Intro to Quilting class at the Sewing Arts Center (SAC) in Santa Monica and my mission was to create a handmade gift for my soon to be born niece. By the time Eden arrived in early May 2009, I had completed a beautiful "Around the Block" quilt with the help of Becky, my instructor, the machines at SAC, and finally my newly purchased Viking Huskvarna machine. The colors were pink and green to match the theme of Eden's new nursery and the prints funky and modern to reflect my taste. Looking back at that quilt it was fairly simple, but still very special.

Since early 2009, I have completed 8 other quilts, and am working on my 10th. 7 of these quilts have been created for close friend's and family's newborn babies and one Scrappy quilt for myself and my boyfriend Steve. The babies in order of birth are 1. Lucy 2. Jonah 3. Sam 4. Brendan 5. Vivian 6. Wyatt and 7. Baby K's (Due in the next week!). A few of these were created without knowing if it was a boy or girl, so the colors are more gender-neutral.

Quilt number 10 has been a project to keep me busy during the holiday weeks, and the first quilt where I am not following a pattern, but creating from scratch of my own design. Definitely inspired by the many quilts I've seen on blogs and the LA Modern Quilt Guild online. I am finished with the top and back and should be pinning/basting this weekend to start the quilting.

Here are some pictures of my completed quilts to date.... and look out for many more to come!
